Madison Area Technical College's former controller was charged Tuesday with stealing more than $34,000 from the school between 2004 and 2007 by writing checks to himself from the college's coffers.

Ryan L. Liebert, 45, of Lomira, is scheduled to appear in court on Thursday to face one count of theft in a business setting. Roger Price, senior vice president for administration at MATC, which is also called Madison College, said Liebert worked at the school from 2000 to October 2007, when he left to take a job at UW-Milwaukee.
