Ferris State University was going for green — and got the gold.

The Big Rapids university's East Campus Suites buildings received LEED Gold certification. LEED is an internationally recognized building certification system and stands for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design.

Ferris achieved the distinction for incorporating numerous green design and construction features into the buildings. They include a 30 percent reduction in water use, 18 percent reduction in energy use and the diversion of more than 90 percent of construction waste from landfills.

The East Campus Suites buildings are designed as single student housing for the fall and spring semesters. They are for students who are at least 20 years old by the first day of classes in the fall semester.
