Former Makah tribal chairman Micah McCarty has been named Special Assistant to the President for Tribal Government Relations at The Evergreen State College in Olympia. College officials say it's a new position.
“Micah is a noted tribal leader and artist, with great experience in health care, cultural survival, treaty resources, sustainable development, and energy issues,” Evergreen president Thomas “Les” Purce said in a news release. “We know his expertise and passion will help us strengthen our relationships with Native communities.”
About 4.5 percent of Evergreen students are Native American, and the college offers a master of public administration degree with a concentration on tribal governance. It also has a program on the study of Native American and world indigenous peoples, and sponsors a tribal reservation-based program.
