Facing a steep decline in enrollment for fall semester, Grand Rapids Community College has instituted a hiring freeze for all positions across the college, President Steven Ender announced Monday.

Student contact hours for the fall are down by 9 percent from the same time last year – a bigger drop than the college has budgeted for, Ender said. If enrollment doesn’t climb, the college could face a $900,000 budget shortfall.

“Community colleges always grow enrollment during recessionary times. They always lose during expansions,” Ender told the GRCC Board of Trustees. “The question is, where does it level off?”

Ender said all open full-time, permanent positions will be filled by adjuncts until further notice.
