Financial difficulties at Sweet Briar Collegehave prompted its board of directors to approve plans that will reduce faculty size, eliminate two majors and downsize several academic programs.
Over the next two years, Sweet Briar plans to cut the equivalent of 11 full-time faculty positions, which will include a mix of part-time and full-time employees. This will reduce the faculty size to 85 full time-equivalent positions.
The college will eliminate the German and engineering management majors, along with a minor in law and society.
“Of course these decisions are difficult. Of course they’re challenging for morale,” said Sweet Briar president Jo Ellen Parker.
