While in the early stages, the University of Colorado is considering merging its College of Music with a new, interdisciplinary college that would include arts, media and design.
Last month, a committee tasked with looking into the future of journalism and information programs on the Boulder campus proposed creating a new College of Media, Design and the Arts and suggested that various disciplines, including the College of Music, be included. The new college could also be home to architecture and environmental design, art and art history, communication, film studies, journalism, and theater and dance.
"The report creates an atmosphere that says, 'Let's be open to change in order to be better,'" said Dan Sher, dean of the College of Music.
But the initial release of the proposal in mid-April prompted a flurry of internal e-mails in the College of Music -- which were sent to the Camera anonymously -- that reveal a split in opinion over what's best for the future of the college. One music faculty member worried the upper administration doesn't value music and another felt the music school was left out of the discussion.
