Construction of the Alumni Welcome and Conference Center is currently underway, as well as the demolition of the River Center, to make room for the RecPlex for the enhancement of Oshkosh campus life.
According to Steve Arndt, director of facilities management, ground was broken at the end of December, marking the beginning of construction for the new Alumni Center. “Loud pounding noises can be heard across campus,” Arndt said. “This is the sound of poles being driven into the ground. These poles will serve as support for the structure of the new building.”
Since the project started during the winter, Arndt said delays were anticipated. “Regardless of the recent weather, nothing has negatively affected the project so far,” Arndt said. “Since we started in December, we knew what we would be dealing with weather-wise.” The Alumni Center has been under construction for more than two months now. With February ending, Arndt said there have been no significant changes to the building plan.
“Of course there are always changes, but regarding the Alumni Center, the design is complete,” Arndt said. “We are on schedule and well set for the next few months.”
The Alumni Center will be the front door of UW Oshkosh, according to Alumni Director Christine Gantner.
“It will be located next to the Student Recreation and Wellness Center, on the corner of Wisconsin Street and Pearl Avenue,” Gantner said. “This new building will be the first thing visitors will see when they visit campus.”
Gantner said the Alumni Center will be the showpiece for campus life, equipped with high-tech conference rooms, board rooms and a ballroom that can hold 460 people.
