Construction begins on University of Akron student apartment complex

The NRP Group of Cleveland has begun construction on a 624-bed, four-story student housing community at the University of Akron.

The developer, general contractor and property manager said it will invest more than $30 million at the site of a former "Akron Beacon Journal" sorting and storage facility, which originally was a freight station for the Erie Railroad. The site is at 80 East Exchange St. in Akron.

The existing building will be taken down to make way for new construction of student apartments that will be called “The Depot,” NRP Group said in a news release.
