College mentor returns to Roseland 'to give out hope'

Growing up in the poverty stricken South Side community of Roseland in a neighborhood plagued by violence, Corey Hardiman had few uplifting role models to pattern his life after, he said.

Still, despite the obstacles, Hardiman managed to secure a prestigious Gates Millennium Scholarship to Morehouse College in Atlanta. Throughout his childhood, he found inspiration and motivation wherever he could to keep pushing ahead and reaching for his goals, he said.

“I had plenty of nights that I cried because of the lack of resources in Roseland,” said Hardiman, 22. “There were so many things that were not accessible to us. But if there was an organization that had college as its goal, I was a part of it. I did whatever I could to find opportunities.”
