Students and college officials warned of unintended consequences from too closely tying financial aid to college performance measures like salaries of graduates, during a Friday forum organized by the U.S. Department of Education.
The public hearing at the University of Northern Iowa is the third of four meetings designed to gather feedback on a plan to rate colleges based on access and affordability. President Barack Obama unveiled a broad outline of the plan in an August speech.
The Obama administration wants to link up to $150 billion in federal student financial aid to college ratings by 2018. Several possible ranking systems are scheduled to be announced this spring, U.S. Under Secretary of Education Martha Kanter said.
