Chafee Balks At 3-Percent Raises Proposed For College Employees

Governor Chafee told the chairman of the Board of Governors for Higher Education Wednesday that he cannot support retroactive 3-percent raises tentatively negotiated with faculty at the University of Rhode Island and three other unions at URI, Rhode Island College and the Community College of Rhode Island.

Governor Chafee said he learned Wednesday morning of the proposed 3-percent raises, which the state cannot afford and when it is also proposing a 9.5-percent tuition increase at URI, and increases of 7.5 percent at CCRI and 4 percent at RIC.
