State Senators Rick Gallot, Gerald Long and Neil Riser and Reps. Lance Harris, Chris Hazel and Robert Johnson gave their thoughts on the upcoming session. Among their issues of concern is the cost to students at state colleges, particularly Louisiana State University of Alexandria and Northwestern State University in Central Louisiana.
“Sometimes you can do without money, but not in higher education,” Long said. “We are pricing the average student out of higher education. We have cut higher education to the point that what you’re going to see is kids miss out on the opportunity to continue their education.”
Gov. Bobby Jindal submitted his $24.9 billion budget plan to the legislature last month. In it, funding for public colleges and universities increased by $142 million. The majority of that, $88 million, would come from increases in tuition and other student fees.
