Centenary College is supporting an exciting new hiring model in the world of online education by sponsoring Professors On Demand, Academia's Virtual Resource Pool®.

For the past 10 years, online enrollment has been growing faster than traditional enrollment for higher education.  In traditional programs, colleges are limited to hiring professors who live within commuting distance of a school. In the online world, the resource pool is potentially global.  “Online education has freed us from the limited pool of professors in a local area,” says Kathy Naasz, Co-Founder and President of Professors On Demand. “Why not get the best professor in the world for a specific course?  To do that, a global database is needed with meaningful profiles of professors based on academic criteria, and that is just what we have created.”

The sponsorship by Centenary College acknowledges Professors On Demand as a recognized service for colleges and universities. This sponsorship will not only allow Centenary College to staff its online courses with the best resources from around the world, but it will also serve as an outlet for online faculty development, helping online teachers boost their skills.  The Hackettstown-based institution, which was the first in the state to offer a completely wireless campus and one of the first to provide online degree programs in New Jersey, is now taking the next step in developing online faculty to ensure quality educators can be found in the virtual classroom.

ProfessorsOnDemand.com has a global database of professors from 43 states and 15 countries.   A key differentiator is in the way that it organizes professor profiles in what it calls the O-Score (short for Online Score), which is a four-part profile capturing teaching experience, industry experience, knowledge areas and online competencies. Another differentiator is the matching service offered.  Rather than post a job and wait for submissions, institutions can search according to profile criteria and find instructors that match their requirements for:

  • Degree Level

  • Teaching Experience (years and levels)

  • Knowledge Areas (over 300 subject areas)

  • Industry Experience

  • Online Competency Score

  • Formats Taught (hybrid, online, or on ground)

  • Learning Management System

“Professors on Demand simplifies the search for online faculty by bringing qualified candidates – and everything you need to know about them – directly to your fingertips.  Seeing an instructor’s itemized O-Score does some heavy lifting by immediately identifying instructors who possess traits and experiences that translate into online teaching excellence,” says Anthony Yacullo, J.D., Director of Faculty Services, Centenary College.

The O-Score profile is easy to set-up; drop-down menus make it fast for professors to enter data without  re-typing the same data that is already on their resumes, and it provides colleges with a sophisticated search, not just key words, but rather a criteria-based matching service.  “The growing demand for online education, the presence of MOOCS, and the creative solutions in this space, from the likes of Coursera and Udacity, have created tremendous opportunities to increase global knowledge.  As we now have classrooms of 50,000 students, shouldn’t we get the best teacher in front of them? Not every on ground teacher is a good online teacher, so we created a competency assessment and include that in the O-Score profile of each professor in the database,” says Kathy Naasz.  The self-assessment and competency score help professors to identify areas of weakness and improve.  So in addition to being a customer of Professors On Demand, Centenary College identified the need to further develop faculty in the online space and believes that Professors On Demand is the vehicle for them to do just that.

About Professors On Demand: Professors On Demand is on a mission to ensure that the best available teaching resources are connected with institutions offering online courses.  In so doing, the quality of online education and the global body of knowledge will both increase.

Launched in 2011 by two Centenary professors, Associate Professor Kathy Naasz and Dr. Lisa Plantamura, Professors On Demand is a registered LLC in New Jersey.  Its unique offering of a matching service, linking online professors with colleges via an O-Score profile, is the first of its kind for academia.  Visit professorsondemand.com to learn more and to experience this service.
