Although the state Legislature axed a plan to split UW-Madison from the University of Wisconsin System from the state budget, it called for the creation of a "Special Task Force" to study the UW System.
Only one public appointment has been made to the 17-member task force. A bill has been introduced to delay the due date of the task force's findings from Jan. 1, 2012, to Jan. 7, 2013.
Assembly Minority Leader Peter Barca, D-Kenosha, made the sole appointment so far with Rep. Steve Doyle, D-Onalaska. The task force will get $50,000 for expenses.
The task force will address issues such as: Is there is a need to restructure the UW System? What does the task force recommend for a new governance structure? Can the UW System have more control over tuition while ensuring affordability? How should compensation plans for UW System employees be determined in the future?
