Carroll College hosts "active shooter" training exercise

Carroll College faculty and staff took part in an "active shooter" training drill orchestrated by the Helena Police Department on Friday.

Lori Peterson, vice president of financial services at Carroll College, said, "Our number one priority in this type of incident is to protect our students."

Back in 1990, a gunman opened fire in a Carroll College cafeteria, killing one person and wounding another. As Peterson noted, it just goes to show that shootings can happen anywhere.

"As we know, we're not immune to this type of thing unfortunately," Peterson said. "These things can happen. They're happening more all the time across higher education."

Events such as 2012's Sandy Hook shooting, Columbine, and Virginia Tech have led Helena law enforcement to instruct those at Carroll College.
