The Virginia State Crime Commission will consider legislation to improve cooperation between campus police and local police departments.
The measure to require "mutual aid agreements" for handling death and sexual assault cases on college campuses is on the agenda for today's commission meeting. The panel will consider whether to make the bill part of its legislative package for the 2012 General Assembly.
Democratic Del. Paula Miller of Norfolk originally proposed divesting campus police of authority over such investigations. Campus police objected, and Miller submitted a revised bill that takes a more collaborative approach.
The commission also will consider a couple of child-protection measures and whether to further tighten regulation of an over-the-counter medicine used to manufacture methamphetamine.
