A Calvin College search committee is recommending Michael K. Le Roy of Whitworth University in Spokane, Wash. to replace retiring President Gaylen Byker.

Since 2010, Le Roy has been the provost and executive vice president of Whitworth University, where he was appointed vice president for academic affairs and dean of faculty in 2005. Affiliated with the Presbyterian Church (USA), the private liberal arts college has 2,675 students.

“His strengths as a scholar, teacher, and administrator and his deep passion for Reformed Christianity make him an ideal fit for our college,” according to a letter from the search committee to Calvin faculty and alumni.

If approved by Calvin's Board of Trustees and ratified by the Christian Reformed Synod, Le Roy would be the first Calvin president without a background in the Christian Reformed Church. Le Roy and his wife, Andrea, are both ordained elders and members of a Presbyterian Church in Spokane, according to his curriculum vitae.
