The competition among research universities for top faculty is always tough no matter the department, but recruiting professors in fields that also offer high-paying jobs in the private industry can be doubly challenging, say officials at the University of Iowa.
That’s why it makes sense that faculty in business, medicine, dentistry and engineering are among the highest paid at UI and schools across the country, said Barry Butler, executive vice president and provost at UI.
“Like anything in our society, it’s quite often market driven,” Butler said. “You’re always looking at what the competition is.”
The list of Iowa’s highest paid state employees often looks similar from year to year, with athletic coaches, specialty doctors and surgeons topping the charts.
