Bryant Univ. (R.I.) president vows suit if town reimbursement talks fail

Bryant University President Ronald K. Machtley said Sunday that if there is no resolution to a disagreement over a General Assembly-approved bill that would require the university to reimburse the town for police, fire and rescue service expenses, the sides will be “in the courts, spending money on this legislation.”

Machtley argued it is “a disappointing, discouraging piece of legislation” that, in his view, disregards the university’s nonprofit status.

Machtley used the 5 p.m. news conference Sunday to again urge Governor Chafee to veto the bill, which is headed to his desk, and said the university is seeking a meeting with the governor.
