Mary Cunningham Boyce, the Ford Professor of Engineering and head of MIT’s Department of Mechanical Engineering, has been named the dean of the Fu Foundation School of Engineering and Applied Science at Columbia University, effective July 1, 2013.
In his announcement, Columbia President Lee C. Bollinger praised Boyce’s collaborative work and leadership in overseeing research teams that bring together faculty from different departments and universities: “Professor Boyce has distinguished herself throughout her academic career not only as a scholar but also as a teacher and mentor driven by an abiding commitment to nurturing the next generation of engineers.”
Boyce has been a member of the MIT community since 1981; she received her PhD in mechanical engineering from the Institute in 1987. Her research in the mechanics of manufactured and naturally formed materials has led to a range of new products and processes, and also to more than 150 publications and 10 patents and membership in a range of distinguished professional societies, including the National Academy of Engineering. Boyce is a former MacVicar Faculty Fellow and received the Joseph Henry Keenan Innovation in Undergraduate Education Award.
