Blackboard to open virtual higher ed bookstores

Blackboard, which built its empire by giving cyber support to schools and universities, is now increasing its support for students. The company plans to open a virtual bookstore where students can purchase or rent textbooks and other course materials, according to a news release.

It's just the latest step in the company's strategy shift under CEO Jay Bhatt, chronicled last July in a Business Journal cover story.

The District-based company is kicking off the initiative with limited trials this spring with about a dozen colleges and universities. A full launch is planned this summer.
