LINDSBORG, KAN., January 12, 2013—At a news conference Friday, Jan. 11, President Edward F. Leonard III announced that Bethany College had successfully completed the challenge grant from the J. E. and L. E. Mabee Foundation to complete fundraising for the Bud Pearson Swedish Chapel and Mabee Foundation Welcome Center.

“I am pleased to announce with the hard work of the Bethany College Board of Directors, Office of Advancement, alumni, friends, and volunteers, we have met and exceeded our fundraising goals,” said Leonard on Friday.

This new building will be located at the heart of campus to provide hospitality for all who worship, visit, learn, and work in the Bethany community. In February 2012, over $2.26 million had been raised toward the $3.5 million building, and the Mabee Foundation issued its challenge grant that it would provide $500,000 if Bethany secured the remaining $744,000 by January 11, 2013.

“For the first time in over 30 years, Bethany will construct a fully fund-raised building,” said Leonard. “My personal target is to begin construction in late spring or early summer with a dedication at our 2014 Homecoming.”

Leonard also shared many other Bethany ventures, including its new offering of media arts certificates at MindFire Academy in Wichita, the American Spiritual Ensemble’s involvement in this year’s Messiah Festival of the Arts, and the continued movement towards Bethany’s “Engage the Future” vision of its 150th anniversary in 2031. The Chapel and Welcome Center, a cornerstone of the campaign, brings total fundraising to $16 million of the $20 million base goal and $25 million stretch goal.

“Bethany is making bold and innovative steps, and we are confident in a bright future because God’s hand is guiding us,” said Leonard. “Our work is not done, but today let’s celebrates these milestone achievements.”
