Want to fly to Mars?
By 2014, Muncie residents will be able to do so, or at least the next best thing to it, and much, much more with the construction of a huge new state-of-the-art planetarium at Ball State University.
So will this place bring space alive for us earthlings?
“Oh, God,” affirmed Ron Kaitchuck of the Department of Physics and Astronomy, almost breathless with anticipation.
Approved by the Ball State Trustees on Friday, the new planetarium is becoming a reality due to the largesse of a 1971 alumnus, Charlie Brown, whose astronomical gift is rooted in the most worldly of sources, chicken and tacos. Co-owner of Southern Bells, a chain of Taco Bell and KFC restaurants, Brown is providing a contribution of nearly $2.2 million, representing almost half the $4.6 million needed to complete the facility.
