A proposed $32 million addition to the Scheman Building at Iowa State University would give Ames a long-sought convention center.
But voters must first approve a bond referendum scheduled for March 4. The $19 million bond vote must reach 60 percent approval. The city and ISU would split the cost of the project, which includes $6.5 million to renovate the Scheman Building.
The 128,000-square-foot addition would be built on the north side of Scheman where a parking lot now stands. A 35,000-square-foot exhibit space would be on an upper level, which protects against flooding. The ground floor would include covered parking.
