The Council of Independent Colleges is leading a public information campaign for the liberal arts and liberal arts colleges. The organization hopes to persuade the public that the liberal arts are fundamental to the education of all Americans and that these subjects will help young people achieve their legitimate aspirations to stimulating careers, good salaries, personal fulfillment, and a sense of contributing to the common good.

Southeast Community College officials are reporting double-digit declines in enrollment. The year-to-year figure is down nearly 12 percent, and the spring quarter enrollment is down around 17 percent from the 2012 figure. The school says the final count of full-time students for the 2012-2013 school year is just over 8,800, compared with just under 10,000 the year before.

California is renowned for its community college system, but its budget, along with other forms of education, has been reduced significantly. The difference for community college is that cuts have led to a steady decline in enrollment, limiting access to higher education.

It costs much more to recruit new students than to keep the ones you have, which is why retention is so important to colleges and universities. With a 67 percent one-year retention rate costing $6.5 million in lost revenue annually, Valdosta State University (Ga.) officials knew they had to act. The problem was data that could have helped identify remedies were sorely lacking, and what little information the institution possessed was difficult to access and analyze.

College of the Redwoods officials say cutting courses in some programs may help boost student enrollment overall at the local campus, despite findings in a new report released this week that enrollment rates in California's community colleges have plunged as cash-strapped campuses ax classes and instructors.

ApplyAlly allows prospective students to search for and interact with schools they might be interested in attending, and it allows college admissions professionals access to student data and analytical tools to understand that data, providing a complete picture of each individual student.
